It's such a loose term. Bandied about way too often and almost always conditional. I try to teach my children to rely on family - spouses, brothers, sisters, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. These are the relationships that, if nurtured, will truly sustain you. True friendship is becoming a rare if nonexistent condition - another casualty of the era we find ourselves in that is defined by an almost complete erosion of human virtue. Call me jaded.

It sure does diminish the meaning of the word when you have McCain and other bipartisan/maverick/weak-kneed softies out there calling scum like Teddy Kennedy "my friend".

Gee ... when someone makes a post like this, I assume there's a story to tell.

I hope all is well.

I agree Di, real friendships are difficult to find and when they are, it's to be treasured for a lifetime. You are a true friend. It's integrity that makes you one.

It is true that in these busy times it hard to find true friendship. So many people claim to want friends but are unwilling or unable to do what it takes to make and keep friends. You can't have friends unless you are willing to put yourself out there and be a friend yourself. It is easy to take friends for granted. Few people want to balance the "give and take" and concentrate only on the "taking" aspect of friendship. I'm not a perfect person or friend for that matter but I try to be a friend to everyone regardless of whether or not they are a friend to me. I find I have a happier existence this way. :)

IDNKM- That is so true. It always bugged me when McCain constantly referred to people as "my friends". This must be why. Thanks for putting that in perspective.

Billy - If you look up "true friend" in the dictionary, your picture will be there! Lol!

KLS - You sound more like our mother every day!

Christi - Hang in there, girl.

PI - with friends like that.. who needs... oh, never mind.

EBB- That is the problem. Ya "put yourself out there" and at the first hint of strife your fair weather friend declares open season on you. Its getting to where you can't even complain about your husbands stinky feet! Lol!

What a time to speak of friendship,i'm so very blessed to have supportive friends. I'm having double knee replacement and my friends have called, came by . When i was a little girl, i read a poem . Friends are like diamonds true and there , false friends are Autumn leaves , you will find them everywhere .Mammma Hen.

This makes me really sad for you. I have many, many great friends that I have had for decades, and many newer friends that I can easily imagine knowing and loving years from now.
I don't know what happened that made you feel this way, but I really hope it's temporary and you come to realize that friends are just as trustworthy/important, etc, as family.
